Diocesan Resource Directory of Church Based Social
Services is dedicated to all those in the Diocese
of Long Island who minister to the needy among us,
those who "entertain angels unaware."

For
Them Let Us Pray
Heavenly
Father, whose blessed Son came not to be served
but to serve: Bless all who, following in
his steps, give themselves to the service
of others; that with wisdom, patience, and
courage, they may minister in his Name to
the suffering, the friendless, and the needy;
for the love of him who laid down his life
for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Introduction
Purpose
of Directory
Family
Consultation Service is pleased to provide this
directory, which includes information about a
wide variety of social service programs offered
by parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island.
Working with the clergy and laity of the Diocese
of Long Island, Family Consultation Service often
becomes acquainted with social ministries provided
by local congregations. Recognition that many
of these ministries were known to relatively few
encouraged the development of this book. It is
hoped that it will support the sharing of resources,
ideas and know-how. Why "reinvent the wheel"
when there are others whose experiences and expertise
can help us to be better stewards of our time,
talent and resources?
Development
of Directory
This
is the fourth edition of the Diocesan Resource
Directory of Church Based Social Services.
For each edition clergypersons-in-charge (senior
wardens where there were none) of parishes were
asked to provide revised up-to-date information
for inclusion in the directory. We rejoice in
the number of parishes that responded.
Organization
of Directory
Some
readers/users of this directory may note that
different parishes categorize programs differently.
Parishes were encouraged to tell their own stories;
no effort was made to reclassify programs or ministries
deliberately.
Churches have been grouped according to archdeaconries.
Within archdeaconry sections, parishes appear
in alphabetical order - by name of the church
in the Archdeaconry of Brooklyn and by name of
the church's location (town, village or city)
in the Archdeaconries of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.
We think that information about the accessibility
of parish facilities is of utmost importance -
it shows that parishes consider The Episcopal
Church Welcomes You a reality and not
just a sign. Many have reported that the inclusion
of directions has helped them travel the diocese.
As you use this directory you may find that there
are things that should have been included. Please
give us feedback! That's why service schedules,
e-mail addresses and websites are included in
this edition. Tell us what is helpful to you -
we want to know!
Family
Consultation Service recognizes that
churches serve more people than all other institutions
and social programs combined. Nevertheless, churches
are not social agencies. Churches become involved
in social service activities because they are caring
communities: carrying out the Gospel of Jesus Christ;
bearing one another's burdens; and responding to
His command to Love One Another.
A
special thank you to:
Our
Bishops, the Rt. Rev. Orris G. Walker, Jr. the
Rt. Rev. Rodney R. Michel for their ongoing
support of social ministries in the Diocese of
Long Island.
The
clergy and laity who responded to requests
for information with enthusiasm, encouragement
and suggestions.
The
Board of Directors of Family Consultation Service
for their financial support and encouragement
of this project.
