Civil Rights Lawyers Participate in Parish "Immigration Dinner"

By The Rev. Michael Sniffen

On Tuesday, February 23rd,  45 Hispanic day laborers (many undocumented) were welcomed at St. John's of Lattingtown for an evening meal and fellowship with clergy of Lattingtown, members of vestry, parishioners and civil rights lawyers.

During the evening, guests were given information about the current national census, how to advocate for their First Amendment rights and how to understand current US immigration policy.

One-on-one counseling with attorneys from the ACLU, NYCLU and other organizations was available.

This was part of ongoing parish pastoral care and outreach in the local area to underserved communities.

The clergy took food and coffee early in the morning to those standing out in the bitter cold waiting for work.

The event is now developing into a monthly parish meal and program with plans for a Eucharist in Spanish.
