Holy Innocents Epiphany Project at St. John's, Park Slope

Christmas was over when the Three Wise Men followed the bright star to find the Christ Child and present their gifts.  But what happened next wasn’t a nice story.  King Herod sent his soldiers to kill all children age 2 and younger to eliminate the Messiah.  These “Holy Innocents” are remembered in a special Epiphany project by St. John’s Episcopal Church in Park Slope.

St. John’s is collecting clothing, including onesies, as well as diapers and baby wipes to benefit two organizations; Room to Grow and the Family Justice Center of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

Room to Grow helps parents of children born into poverty by providing clothing (hats, socks, onesies and toddler outfits) for the first three years.  Parents also get child development information and parental coaching and support.  At the Brooklyn DA’s Office Family Justice Center victims of domestic violence and their children get support while going through the legal system to get out of violent situations.  Since some victims leave home with their children and only the clothes they are wearing, the FJC provides clothing and diapers.

St. John’s is located at 139 St. John’s Place in Park Slope, just off Seventh Avenue.  Donations of clothing, diapers and baby supplies or cash contributions can be brought to the church during the day; Wednesday to Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM or evenings from 7-9 PM.  The Holy Innocents Epiphany Project will end on Ash Wednesday, February 25, 2009.  Call the church – 718-783-3928 – for more information.
