DIOCESAN NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
Diocesan Convention Authorized Call for Bishop Coadjutor

BISHOP WALKER

The Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, meeting in convention November 9 and 10, in Hauppauge, N.Y., affirmed the resolution submitted by Diocesan Bishop Orris G. Walker, Jr., calling for election of a Bishop Coadjutor.

Bishop Walker turned 65 on November 5th and has served as the seventh bishop of the diocese since January 1991.

In a presentation by the Interim Joint Oversight Committee for the calling of a coadjutor, comprised of members of the Diocesan Council and the Diocesan Standing Committee, it was estimated that the timeline for planning, searching, calling and consecration of the coajutor could take a year and a half.  The committee's interim status will conclude when the full JOC is named within the next few weeks.

The co-chairs of the Interim JOC are the Rev. Peter F. Casparian and Ms. Donna E. Jones.

The committee announced that details and ongoing reports of its work will be published in the diocesan newspaper, The Dominion, and soon on a special website, as well as via the public media.

Reporting for the committee will be done by its official spokesperson, the Very Rev. Dr. Glenworth D. Miles.  Fr. Miles is also available by email for questions about the role and work of the JOC. His address is: stgeorge@att.net

The convention also approved the "creation of the position of Assistant Bishop." The diocesan bishop indicated to the Diocesan Standing Committee and the convention that assistance is needed with the duties of his office, including presiding at some of the numerous agencies for which the diocesan serves as president.

In other actions, the convention re-affirmed its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals and participation in the ONE campaign ("to make poverty history") of which the Episcopal Church is a member through its own "ONE Episcopalian" campaign*; voted support for the 75th General Convention's request to study new congregational development opportunities; and affirmed a resolution highlighting the importance of ministry with youth.

The Episcopal Diocese of Long Island comprises 146 congregations, missions and chapels, and 52,780 active church members, served by 318 clergy.

*The "ONE Episcopalian" campaign is a grassroots partnership between the Episcopal Church and the ONE Campaign, of all faiths, to rally Episcopalians - one by one - to the cause of ending extreme poverty in the world and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's).

The Episcopal Church, USA, endorsed the MDG's at its 74th national General Convention in 2003.
