On July 6 at a meeting in his office, Bishop Larry Provenzano “blessed” the newly formed Women’s Commission in the Diocese of Long Island.

A group of 6 women connected by their attendance at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in March have been meeting to develop a plan for mobilizing women, lay and ordained, to engage in mission in the diocese particularly around issues of women’s and girls empowerment.

The founding members of the Commission are the Rev. Joan Fraser, Eunice Indowu, Barbara Pace, Jeanne Provenzano, Kim Robey and Jane Appleyard Roel.

"The Women's Commission for the Diocese of Long Island seeks to raise awareness of issues affecting women and girls through prayer, study and education by focusing the attention of the diocese on the implications of the Baptismal Covenant's commitment to 'respect the dignity of every human being' in seeking justice for women and girls locally, nationally and internationally."

While we will publicly launch ourselves at a presentation we will give at our diocesan convention in November, The Women’s Commission invites your participation now as it seeks to be truly representative of all women in our diverse diocese.

Our plans at the moment are to:

• Show the film “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” at our diocesan convention

• Begin a Beijing Circles group at the Cathedral of the Incarnation

• Participate in the international 16 days of activism against gender violence campaign

• Send two girls and their sponsors to the 2011 UNCSW on the "Girl Child."

• Hold a spring event for all women, and men, including a Eucharist and lunch

A fuller explanation of each of these action items will be available in the next few weeks.
